THE GRAND PRIZES

The nominees

Wednesday 9 December 2009. A jury chaired by Jean-Michel Wilmotte and made up of well-known personalities from the automobile world, the arts and media met behind closed doors in the salons of Les Invalides in Paris to decide on the winners of the 25th International Automobile Festival. Overseen by Rémi Depoix, President of the Festival, this year's deliberations took place in a unique atmosphere. The economic and financial climate of the automobile industry called for a good measure of realism on the part of the jury.

For the last twenty-four years, the Festival has endeavored to reward innovation in a field that has always aroused great emotion and passion. However, the current economic situation is revealing a deeper crisis of conscience, as demonstrated by a significant change in our perception and use of cars. Changing world orders, a fall in purchasing power and, above all, dawning recognition of environmental issues have transformed our way of thinking. The challenge for designers, engineers and marketing experts is to find an appropriate response to this paradox: designing a car that meets new expectations and requirements while still retaining its seductive appeal.

These influences guided the deliberations and decisions of the Festival Jury, endeavoring to place the spotlight on those individuals, events and creations that are helping to maintain desire and passion for an irreplaceable object of mobility and freedom. The jury has rewarded the creativity of an industry that has always been able to adapt to changing fortunes, from the crash of 1929 to the oil shocks of the 1970s.
